AAEA Artist's Table In NYC

Hello Alabama Art Educators,

We have signed up for an Artisan table at the NYC National Conference.

What does that mean? Thursday evening at the Conference they will have a Gallery area of handcrafted items for sale created by art educators.

ALABAMA has a table. We are hoping to raise money for AAEA.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Give us an item or two to sell. You get 50% of the Sale and 50% goes to AAEA.

If you are interested you can give or send your Item to SHARON CHRISTMAN or LAUREN FOWLER.

Items need to be labeled with a price and if you want your calling card included attach both to the item.

We also need information to keep up with items. Give us an inventory list of your items with price and your name and contact information.

Sales will be cash only so keep this in mind. Items should be in the $10-$40 range.

Keep in mind that items will be transported in a suitcase by one of us so they need to be small, nonbreakable, and easy to transport on an airplane. They will have to fit among our travel items..lol.

After the Conf. Sharon Christman will mail you your check.

If you are attending the Conference you can bring your item(s) to the Gallery on Thursday between 6:00-7:00 pm. Sale starts at 7:00 and ends at 9:00.

This will be the first time we have tried something like this. Hopefully it will be a success and we can continue in future years.

NEW for 2012! FOCUS on COLLABORATION!!! We are adding a category challenge for 2012: Collaboration. [It is optional and individually created hexagons are always welcome.] In keeping with the concept of Interdependence – understanding and practicing skills that lead to solutions, statements, understanding and outcomes that are greater than any one individual can produce – …we challenge students and teachers to think of ways they might approach the project with an element of collaboration, teamwork, group interaction and/or problem-solving. Recognition is given to students who demonstrate outstanding responses to the themes of Interdependence in a variety of media.

Blue Sky Green Earth Art Competition

Waste Pro To Host Juried Art Show, “Blue Sky, Green Earth” at Birmingham Recycling Facility
Birmingham, AL – December 30, 2011 Waste Pro invites artists to participate in Alabama’s first art competition focused solely on functional furniture made from recyclable materials: “Blue Sky, Green Earth”. Interested participants are encouraged to attend a specifications meeting on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 1pm, at the Waste Pro facility at 300 Fleming Road, Birmingham, AL 35217. Entries will be received on February 8, 2012, from 8am to 4pm, with judging taking place on February 9. A display of all entries will be open to the public at a gala to celebrate the artists and their work on Friday, February 10, 2012, at 7pm, at Waste Pro’s Birmingham Recycling Facility.
Waste Pro’s goal with “Blue Sky, Green Earth” is two-fold: to bring attention to domestic recycling and the versatility of the materials involved, and to encourage the growth of a new medium of art and revenue for Southern artists.
Winning pieces will be purchased by Waste Pro. Prizes awarded will be $1,000 1st place, four innovation awards of $500 and nine honor awards of $250 depending on the number of entries received.
“Waste Pro’s motto is Caring for Our Communities and with this event, we hope to open a new avenue for Southern artists and to educate the public as to just how beneficial recycling can be to our region”, said George Nicholson, Division Manager. “The interest in recycling continues to grow in Alabama and we hope that this show will take this interest to a much higher level. We really don’t want “Blue Sky, Green Earth” to be a one-time event. Our goal is that response will be so great that this event becomes an annual tradition that brings together the community, the art world and the recycling industry.”
The gala festivities will take place on February 10, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will allow the public an opportunity to view the works of art, meet the artists, tour the facility and enjoy food and beverages. The event will be held at Waste Pro’s Birmingham facility located at 300 Fleming Road, 35217.

As a retired art educator and professional artist, Becky donates her time and talents by teaching art classes in schools all over Alabama and the southeast. Her personal van is a traveling art classroom, complete with art supplies, tables, and lesson plans and she is ready to travel to your school. She created this foundation out of the kindness of her heart in the hopes all children can have art. Becky goes above and beyond the call of duty to inspire and assist in keeping the arts strong for Alabama. I highly believe in and endorse this program for the positive effect it has on art education in our state.

We are drawing the state of Alabama on a large canvas. Each volunteer will have students paint an area of the state to include some highlight of the area. When it completes its journey we will display it at NAEA.

Details of the 2012 Top Prize – The trip to visit New York Art Museums would include the following -

Airline ticket from a USA airport nearest to the school to a New York area airport and back for the winning student, one parent and Art teacher booked and paid by Sargent Art

All persons traveling to visit New York Art Museums (student, parent and teacher) are required to sign a Waiver of Liability to be eligible to receive this prize; not signing the Waiver of Liability will result in forfeiture of the prize and the New York Art Museums trip

All prizes are non-transferable, non-changeable, and non-negotiable. No substitutions will be made.

Any conflict with the dates of the New York Art Museums trip will result in the forfeiture of the prize and the New York Art Museums trip

All decisions regarding details of the New York Art Museums trip, the Grand Prize, (including but not limited to dates, timings, airline, hotel, eating/dining places, and transportation) to be decided by Sargent Art – No individual requests will be entertained

Any disabilities, medical conditions, special requirements to be communicated to Sargent Art within one week of announcement of the Prizes; delay in communicating the aforementioned will result in forfeiture of the prize and the New York Art Museums trip

I would greatly appreciate if you would forward this request for participation in the jerUSAlem-usa blogart project to art teachers in Lawrence County, Alabama, where there is a place named Jerusalem. They are invited to have their students participate in the jerUSAlem-usa blogart project. In addition to Alabama, there are Jerusalems in Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, and Vermont. JerUSAlem-usa is an art project that links young people from the more than twenty American Jerusalems with those in the original Jerusalem in Israel for which they are named.

For example, see the "Jerusalem, Ohio" posting of Joy Yontz's 5th graders at www.jerUSAlem-usa.com. Her students are photographing and writing about what they would most like others to learn about their lives. These images and texts will be shared with students in schools in Jerusalem, Israel, who will in turn share their photos and words with students in America's Jerusalems. High school and college students are also participating.

I have been an NAEA member for the many years that I worked in the States since earning my doctorate in art education at NYU. I was professor of art and education at Columbia University, head of the art department at Pratt Institute, dean at New World School of the Arts in Miami, and research fellow at MIT's Center for Advanced Visual Studies. My papers have been published in four NAEA books (Inter/sections/Inter/actions: Art Education in a Digital Visual Culture, Interdisciplinary Art Education: Building Bridges to Connect Disciplines and Cultures, Semiotics of Visual Culture: Sights, Signs, and Significance, Community Connections: Intergenerational Links in Art Education) and in the NAEA journals Art Education and Studies in Art Education. I am author of The Future of Art in a Postdigital Age (2011) and Educating Artists for the Future (2008), both published by Intellect Books/University of Chicago Press. I am currently working in Jerusalem, Israel.

AAEA Fall Conference TODAY
